  1. Thelonious Sphere Monk (October 10, 1917 – February 17, 1982) – an American jazz pianist & composer is considered to be one of the giants of American music.
Monk had a unique improvisational style & made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire – some of which will be performed in the band’s debut concert on May 29th. Monk is the second-most recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington – quite a remarkable considering the latter composed over 1,000 songs compared to the 70 odd songs written by Monk! He is one of five jazz musicians to have been featured on the cover of Time magazine (the others being Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis & Dave Brubeck as of 2010)
Monk is remembered for his unorthodox approach to piano-playing – combining a highly ‘percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of silences and hesitations’. He was described once as an ‘elephant on the keyboard’ . He also had the habit of stopping while the other musicians in the band continued playing, stand up from the keyboard and dance for a few moments before returning to the piano!
The Boitsfort ensemble, Monky Toys, have adapted his original compositions to suit the saxophone, bass guitar, drums … and in keeping with Thelonius’ idiosyncratic style have also adopted his penchant for distincitve suits, hats and sunglasses.
